Instead, it’s due to a natural bodily response known as the gastrocolic reflex.

It’s not a medical condition but a normal function that helps clear space in the digestive system for incoming food.

Dr. Salhab explains that when food enters the stomach, it stretches, triggering signals to the brain, which then instructs the colon to contract.

These contractions help make room for new food, resulting in the urge to use the restroom.

The waste being expelled consists of previously digested food and water, not the meal just consumed.

For people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the gastrocolic reflex can be more intense.
