Elderly Man’s Final Request to Hold His Wife’s Hand Gains Widespread Attention

A photograph of an elderly couple in a hospital in eastern China has received significant attention online, depicting a quiet moment shared during their final days.

The image was captured by Wang Yanfang, the head nurse of the ICU at Yinzhou Hospital in Zhejiang Province, and shows a 92-year-old patient, Feng Ming, holding the hand of his 95-year-old wife, Zhang Ping.

A Request at the End of Life

Mr. Feng was admitted to the hospital due to heart failure. His condition quickly deteriorated as he developed multiple organ failure and a lung infection, eventually requiring life support. As his health continued to decline, his family chose to bring him home to spend his remaining time in a familiar environment.

Before discharge, he made a final request — to see his wife, with whom he had shared a 66-year marriage.

Coordination Between Hospital Floors

Mrs. Zhang was also being treated at the same hospital for a broken femur, but on a different floor. Understanding the importance of Mr. Feng’s wish, the hospital made special arrangements. Nurse Wang coordinated the transfer of Mrs. Zhang to the ICU to allow them to meet before his departure.

Due to the patient’s critical condition, the meeting took place outside of standard visiting hours.

A Moment Observed by Medical Staff

According to staff present at the time, the couple held hands during the brief visit. The interaction was quiet and emotional, and those present noted the deep connection between them despite the circumstances. The moment was documented with the family’s consent and later shared online.

Public Response

The photograph has since circulated widely on Chinese social media, prompting reflection on themes of aging, healthcare, and long-term relationships. Thousands of users have commented, calling it a meaningful representation of enduring personal bonds.
