New York City — A major federal building in lower Manhattan, 26 Federal Plaza, was placed under emergency lockdown today after multiple envelopes containing a suspicious white powder were discovered inside.

The building, which houses several federal agencies including an ICE Detention Center, immediately called in hazmat units and the FDNY. Firefighters and specialized teams were seen entering the premises in full protective gear, while streets around the building were cordoned off with heavy police presence.

Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that federal testing of the substance is currently underway. No injuries have been reported at this time, but officials are treating the incident with “the highest level of caution.”Witnesses reported seeing emergency vehicles flooding the area and federal agents escorting workers out of the building.
