Cause of Death for 15-Year-Old Lucy Reed Who Died While Swimming With Friends Revealed – Details

The teenager tragically died just over two years ago. Recent reports confirm that her death was ruled a misadventure following an outing with her mother.

An inquest revealed that Lucy Reed, 15, died from oxygen deprivation after eating pizza and chips before swimming in the Humber River, England, on June 24, 2023.

The teenager had consumed a “substantial” meal before entering the water and was swept out of her depth. She attempted to swim toward shallower ground but began vomiting and inhaled her stomach contents, causing her to lose consciousness.

Dr. Justin Cooke, a pathologist in Hull, performed the post-mortem examination and determined that Lucy died from asphyxia after inhaling gastric contents.

Dr. Paul Smith, the Greater Lincolnshire senior coroner, ruled the death a misadventure, calling it “the unintended consequence of her swimming on a full stomach.” The medical professional clarified that Lucy did not drown, emphasizing the dangers of swimming after eating a large meal.

Lucy visited Cleethorpes Pier in Lincolnshire with her mother, Liz Reed, and a friend on the day of the tragedy. The three shared an early lunch at the time. Her mother reportedly advised her to wait for the food to digest before swimming, but Lucy insisted on going into the water.

She and her friend went to the beach around 1 p.m., agreeing to meet her mother later. When Lucy failed to return on time, her mother called the police at 2:22 p.m.

A search began and lasted more than three hours. Authorities eventually located Lucy later that evening. She was airlifted to Hull Royal Infirmary but was sadly pronounced dead.

Dr. Paul Smith noted that Lucy and her friend were not strong swimmers and were caught by an outgoing tide. While her friend managed to reach safety, Lucy remained in the water for approximately 30 to 40 minutes before a missing person’s report was filed. He added:

“At 15 years, Lucy should have been safe and old enough to keep safe. An earlier search would not have lessened any delay.”

The senior coroner praised the Coastguard for the quality and clarity of their evidence in the case and offered condolences to Lucy’s mother, expressing hope that time would help her heal.

Following the heartbreaking news, a spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said, “Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by the tragic events of 24 June 2023.”

In memory of Lucy, who was born in 2008, her loved ones created an online tribute site featuring messages from friends and family, along with a gallery of photos. The page includes a heartfelt note that reads, “She is much loved and will always be remembered.” As of this writing, people have donated just over $1,000 for the family.

Lucy’s case serves as a reminder of the risks associated with swimming after eating and the importance of water safety, particularly for young swimmers. The inquest findings also highlight how quickly tides can change conditions, even in familiar locations.

Authorities continue to urge families to stay vigilant when visiting open waters. Her loved ones hope that sharing her story will prevent similar tragedies in the future.
