I’ll Never Forget the First Time I Heard Charley Pride’s Voice—It Felt Like Home, and Last Night Luke Combs Stepped up on the Cmt Giants Stage and With Just a Few Notes of ‘Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’’ Pulled Every Heart in the Room Into the Memory of a Legend in a Raw, Soul-Deep Tribute That Left the Entire Crowd Knowing This Was More Than a Performance—It Was Love, Loss, Gratitude, and the Kind of Music That Stays With You Long After the Last Note Fades.

The 2021 CMT Giants special paid a moving tribute to the legendary Charley Pride, gathering some of country music’s biggest names to honor his remarkable life and career. Icons like George Strait, Alan Jackson, and Wynonna Judd took the stage, but it was Luke Combs’ soulful performance of Pride’s signature hit, “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’,” that left the deepest mark on viewers.

For Pride’s family, the night was far more than just a televised celebration—it was a personal and emotional remembrance. His son, Dion Pride, told People how much the tribute meant:

“This is so very meaningful to my family. As proud as we are of all my dad’s accomplishments, this is something that keeps him alive, so to speak. During the screening, I was glad the lights were off because I teared up several times.”

Seeing country music royalty honor his father was a moment Dion will never forget.

“I don’t know if there are any words to really describe how powerful it was to see these people, with the stature of their careers and everything, come out to honor my family and my dad,” he shared.

The special featured heartfelt performances of Pride’s classics, including “Where Do I Put Her Memory,” “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone,” and “All I Have to Offer You (Is Me).” But the emotional high point came when Luke Combs, joined by Robert Randolph and Reyna Roberts, delivered “Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’” with both reverence and soul.

Their powerful rendition wasn’t just a cover—it was a celebration of Charley Pride’s groundbreaking legacy, filled with warmth, respect, and a palpable sense of gratitude. Through moments like this, his music and influence continue to inspire new generations—exactly the kind of tribute that would have made him proud.
