Surfers saw Warner and his daughter struggling, and immediately jumped in to help. One surfer used his board to bring the actor’s daughter to safety, while another surfer and a volunteer lifeguard pulled Warner to shore.

Authorities said the actor received cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for 45 minutes. However, he was pronounced dead by the Costa Rican Red Cross. Warner was 54 when he died near Cocles, a beach in Limon, Costa Rica. Both surfers survived.

On July 21, the actor’s body arrived in San Joaquin de Flores at 4:30 p.m. local time. The following day, police confirmed that his autopsy had been completed. According to the Forensic Pathology Department, the cause of death was asphyxiation by submersion, and it was ruled accidental.

Warner began his acting career by starring as Theo Huxtable, the only son of Bill Cosby’s character, Heathcliff Huxtable, on “The Cosby Show.” He played the role from 1984 until 1992. In 2023, he spoke about his pride in the sitcom, saying, “I know I can speak for all the cast when I say The Cosby Show is something that we are all still very proud of.”

He added, “We share a unique experience that keeps us lovingly bonded no matter how much time goes between seeing or hearing from each other.” However, he acknowledged that the show’s legacy had shifted due to the allegations made against Cosby.

In 2018, Cosby, now 88, was convicted of sexual assault, though the charge was overturned three years later. His legal troubles continued when five more women came forward with similar accusations.

Reflecting on the show, Warner stated, “Regardless of how some people may feel about the show now, I’m still proud of the legacy and having been a part of such an iconic show that had such a profound impact on — first and foremost, Black culture — but also American culture.”

After the sitcom ended, Warner starred in “Malcolm & Eddie” alongside Eddie Griffin from 1996 to 2000. From 2011 to 2015, he played Alex in “Reed Between the Lines” with Tracee Ellis Ross.

His most recent credits include roles in “Major Crimes” as Chuck Cooper, “Suits” as Julius Rowe, “The Resident” as AJ Austin, and appearances in “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” and “9-1-1.”

In addition to acting, Warner’s most recent endeavor was a podcast titled “Not All Hood.” He launched the podcast in June 2024 with co-hosts Candace Kelley and Weusi Baraka. The show aimed to dismantle barriers to mental health within the Black community.

The star described the podcast as a space where he could be his “most vulnerable.” He shared, “It’s been an interesting experience for me, because it’s a place where I feel safe enough to be able to be as vulnerable as I allow myself to be.”

Warner noted that discussions about the Black community often generalize it as a single, unified group. However, he emphasized that the community comprises many diverse elements. He explained that the goal was to create a platform where those varied aspects could be thoroughly explored, discussed, and acknowledged.

Since his death, Malcolm-Jamal Warner has been remembered with tributes from Ross, Angela Bassett, Danny Tamberelli, and Niecy Nash.

He is survived by his wife and daughter, whose identities he kept private.
