Why Do Skin Tags Suddenly Appear? 6 Common Causes Doctors Talk About

Skin tags are small, soft growths that hang off the skin, usually flesh-colored or slightly darker, and can appear almost anywhere on the body. They are extremely common, generally harmless, and often first noticed in adulthood. Many people wonder why they seem to appear “overnight,” though they develop gradually due to various factors.

One common cause is skin friction. Repeated rubbing of skin against skin or clothing can stimulate growth, which is why skin tags often appear on the neck, underarms, groin, or under the breasts. Tight clothing or natural skin folds can increase the likelihood of developing them.

Aging also contributes to skin tags. As skin structure changes with age, collagen and elastin fibers shift, making the skin more prone to benign growths. Hormonal changes, especially during pregnancy, can further encourage their formation by influencing how skin cells grow and repair themselves.

Being overweight can increase the risk of skin tags because extra body weight creates more skin folds and friction. Overall, skin tags are harmless, but understanding the factors behind their development can help explain why they appear and when they may become more noticeable. READ MORE BELOW
