A routine eviction call in Indian River County, Florida, ended in tragedy when a sheriff\u2019s deputy was killed and another injured during a confrontation at a Vero Beach home.Deputy Terri Mashkow, 47, was shot and killed on November 21 while helping remove Michael Halberstam from his mother\u2019s home. A second deputy was wounded in the shoulder, and a locksmith was also injured. Sheriff Eric Flowers described the incident as \u201can awful day, six days before Thanksgiving,\u201d noting that the deputies were performing standard duties.<\/p>\n

Mashkow, another deputy, and the locksmith approached the residence to serve an eviction notice requested by Halberstam\u2019s mother. Authorities say Halberstam suddenly grabbed a firearm and opened fire. Deputies shot back, striking him multiple times. Mashkow died in the line of duty, while the injured deputy is expected to recover. Halberstam later died on November 23.<\/p>\n

Officials revealed he had a criminal record, including drug charges and a misdemeanor assault, and had recently posted concerning statements online. Investigators have not determined why his mother initiated the eviction. State leaders expressed condolences as multiple agencies continue reviewing the shooting. Governor Ron DeSantis said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is working closely with local authorities.<\/p>\n

To honor her bravery, Mashkow was posthumously promoted to sergeant. Her family remembered her as generous, loyal, and devoted to both her community and her children. Her cousin said she \u201cloved her dogs\u201d and always helped others, even off duty. Her husband described her as \u201can amazing woman with a heart of gold.\u201d Her legacy of service continues to resonate across the community.<\/p>\n
