The PSA test is a blood test used primarily to detect prostate cancer. According to the Mayo Clinic, the test detects prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in the blood. PSA is a protein generated by malignant and non-cancerous cells in the prostate, a tiny gland located under the bladder in males.
\nThe Mayo Clinic states that semen, which the prostate also generates, is the most common place to detect it. PSA is normally present in small quantities in the bloodstream.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe PSA test can detect high levels of PSA that may indicate the presence of prostate cancer,\u201d the clinic states on its website. \u201cHowever, many other conditions, such as an enlarged or inflamed prostate, also can increase PSA levels. Therefore, determining what a high PSA score means can be complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n
Doctors have diagnosed the former president\u2019s prostate cancer with a Gleason score of 9 (grade 5) and \u201cmetastasis to bone.\u201d Biden\u2019s cancer score on the Gleason scale, a grading method for prostate cancer severity, raises worries because it is associated with high-grade malignancy.
\nThe fact that Biden\u2019s cancer has been classed as \u201chormone-sensitive\u201d suggests that it may be more susceptible to hormone therapy, making it more curable.<\/p>\n
