His efforts have not gone unnoticed. “It’s unusual for a grower to grow a crop just to give away,”\u00a0said<\/u><\/a>\u00a0Rebecca Page, who helps organize food drives for those in need. “And that’s what Jason has done. And he’s planning to do more.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But Jason pressed on, even when predators threatened livestock and storms ruined crops. After Hurricane Helene devastated parts of Asheville, about four hours away, he donated 100 chickens\u2014already processed and ready to cook\u2014to families in need.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Michael Binger, the Carolinas regional director for the Society of St. Andrew, noted that among the many farmers his nonprofit worked with,\u00a0Jason stood out.<\/u><\/a> He explained that the sheer scale of his giving set him apart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

From the start, Jason had asked if the group could send volunteers to help pick produce he never intended to sell, sticking to his pay-what-you-can model. On the first weekend of November, Binger brought 200 volunteers to help with the harvest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In previous years, that number reached as high as 1,100, but poor weather last fall led to smaller yields. Binger also shared how Jason’s presence seemed to inspire others.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to Binger, there were volunteers who only showed up when Jason was involved, drawn by the atmosphere of kindness and purpose that surrounded the farm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Even beyond produce and prayer, what truly stood out was the quiet influence Jason had on those around him. Volunteer Tom Schad noticed it firsthand. Watching Jason work, he saw no performance \u2014\u00a0only authenticity.<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The spirit he carried into every conversation was matched by the quiet battles he faced behind the scenes. When asked if doubt ever crept in after starting the farm, Jason didn’t hesitate. Yet, what carried him through wasn’t confidence in his own ability but trust in something higher. He shared that God promised to provide every resource and all the wisdom he would need \u2014 and slowly, things began to fall into place. His doubts didn’t hold him back \u2014 they helped shape a deeper connection to the life he chose. For Jason, country living meant freedom. Growing food, raising animals, and not depending on the store gave his family control over their needs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He noticed others doing the same, starting small but\u00a0making a big difference.<\/u><\/a> By 2021, they hadn’t bought eggs, poultry, pork, or beef in almost three years. That, he said, brought a special kind of closeness to the land and to life itself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Jason’s farm has become a hub of activity on any given Sunday. On\u00a0one such morning<\/a>, he pulled up to the property with six of his eight children\u2014ages 5 to 17\u2014in a heavy-duty pickup truck. His eldest, JW, drove a blue tractor. Together, they met up with Schad by a 4,000-gallon water tank that needed repairs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Brown’s mission hasn’t been without challenges. The drought in June last year ruined his muscadine grape crop. Yet he remains focused on the long game. He’s teaching his children not only how to farm but also how to run side businesses marketing farm-grown products.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Though the farm is still expanding, with 13 ponds on the land, some of which he opens to local veterans, Jason’s purpose remains clear. His brother served in the military, and\u00a0honoring veterans<\/a> is part of the fabric of First Fruits Farm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
