Rick kept coming, palms open like I\u2019d just fall into them and finish the walk on his arm. \u201cDaughter,\u201d he said, soft now, like he\u2019d practiced it in the mirror. \u201cLet me make this right. Let me walk you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before I could shape a word, another voice cut the air clean in two.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, hi, Rick,\u201d said Ethan\u2019s dad, Mr. Collins, from the front pew. He stood\u2014calm suit, calmer eyes. \u201cDidn\u2019t expect to see me, did you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence. Even the toddler in Row Three stopped kicking the hymnal.<\/p>\n
Ethan glanced between them. \u201cDad, what\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n
Rick blurted, \u201cI don\u2019t know what he\u2019s talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, I think you do,\u201d Mr. Collins said. He turned to the church. \u201cThis man begged me for a management promotion. I told him to show me loyalty. Show me he understood family.\u201d He tipped his head toward me. \u201cSo he decided to play \u2018devoted father\u2019 at my son\u2019s wedding. He lost his business years ago, he works for me now, and he thought a performance would buy him a raise.\u201d<\/p>\n
A wave of murmurs rolled through the pews. I felt something slip in my chest\u2014like a knot unkinking and a bruise blooming at the same time.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s a lie!\u201d Rick shouted, sweating now. \u201cShe\u2019s my blood! She owes me this!\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr. Collins didn\u2019t blink. \u201cYou don\u2019t get to cash in on blood you never bothered to bleed for.\u201d<\/p>\n
The room tilted. The bouquet shook in my hands. And then the part of me that used to sit on the porch waiting for a dad who never came stood up and found my voice.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou weren\u2019t there,\u201d I said, looking straight at Rick. \u201cYou weren\u2019t there when I fell off the bike. You weren\u2019t there for nightmares, recitals, graduation. You didn\u2019t call when I got into college. You didn\u2019t even like the engagement post\u2014you just stalked it. You don\u2019t get to walk me now. You don\u2019t get this moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dan squeezed my hand. \u201cThat\u2019s my girl,\u201d he whispered, and suddenly the hush broke into clapping\u2014scattered at first, then gathering, filling the vaulted ceiling until it sounded like rain on a tin roof.<\/p>\n
Rick\u2019s mouth opened and closed, but there was nothing left for him to say. He spun, stomped back up the aisle, and slammed the doors so hard the stained glass rattled.<\/p>\n
The violinist found her place. The music rose again. I looked at Ethan. He smiled like the sun burned only for us. Dan swiped at his eyes and placed my hand in Ethan\u2019s.<\/p>\n
\u201cTake care of my girl,\u201d he told him, voice thick.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve got her,\u201d Ethan said, and we did the rest. Vows, rings, laughter that came out a little shaky at first and then easy and warm as the day we got engaged by the lake.<\/p>\n
At the reception, Mr. Collins found me by the desserts. \u201cI\u2019m sorry for the scene,\u201d he said low. \u201cBut he needed to be exposed.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you,\u201d I told him. \u201cFor choosing the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n
Later, stepping out for air, I heard Mr. Collins\u2019 voice around the corner, flat as a judge\u2019s gavel. \u201cYou tried to use my family to manipulate me. You\u2019re done. Don\u2019t come back.\u201d<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t wait to hear Rick\u2019s reply. I went back inside, to Ethan, to my mom swaying with Dan on the dance floor, to the people who had never needed a stage to prove their love.<\/p>\n
Blood didn\u2019t teach me to steer without looking down. Blood didn\u2019t show up on move-in day, or show up with ice cream, or show up today. Love did. Dan did.<\/p>\n
He came up behind me, offered his hand, and grinned. \u201cNow,\u201d he said, \u201clet\u2019s get you back to your wedding, kiddo.\u201d<\/p>\n
