Donald Trump\u2019s newest push to \u201cclean up\u201d Washington, D.C. has plunged the capital into political chaos, sparking outrage from city officials, civil rights advocates, and online critics \u2014 and even prompting renewed calls for impeachment.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the president unveiled what he called a \u201cno Mr. Nice Guy\u201d crackdown on crime, a sweeping, month-long federal takeover of the city\u2019s Metropolitan Police Department. The plan involves deploying 800 National Guard troops to patrol the streets and ordering all homeless encampments to \u201cmove out IMMEDIATELY.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore the tents, squalor, filth, and Crime, it was the most beautiful Capital in the World. It will soon be that again,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social, framing the city as a \u201csanctuary for illegal alien criminals\u201d plagued by \u201clawlessness.\u201d<\/p>\n

His rhetoric leaned heavily on comparisons to some of the world\u2019s most dangerous cities, claiming D.C.\u2019s homicide rate now surpasses Bogot\u00e1 and Mexico City \u2014 despite FBI data showing violent crime at a 30-year low. To justify the federal takeover, Trump cited Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, giving him temporary authority over local law enforcement.<\/p>\n

The most controversial line came during a press briefing at the White House, where Trump said police should have free rein when met with resistance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the only language they understand,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cYou spit, and we hit, and they can hit real hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

The remarks immediately lit up social media. One Reddit user wrote,\u00a0\u201cThe Trump police state is upon us.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Others called it \u201ca road map to unchecked police violence,\u201d warning that such statements normalize brutality under the guise of law and order.<\/p>\n

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, while noting she was \u201cnot totally surprised\u201d given Trump\u2019s past rhetoric, called the move \u201cunsettling and unprecedented,\u201d adding that her administration had not requested federal intervention.<\/p>\n

The controversy over D.C. comes just weeks after Trump faced a legal challenge over his deployment of the National Guard during immigration protests in Los Angeles this past June \u2014 a move made without the California governor\u2019s consent. State officials argued it was a violation of the core constitutional principle that governors control their own Guard units. The Trump administration insists the action was lawful under existing federal statutes.<\/p>\n

For Trump, however, the political message is clear and deliberate. He has framed the D.C. operation not as an overreach, but as a patriotic reclamation. \u201cThis is liberation day in D.C.,\u201d he declared. \u201cWe\u2019re going to take our capital back.\u201d<\/p>\n
