The couple was seated\u00a0under a tree for shade in the 90-degree heat as they watched Marlee go through various softball drills ahead of a scrimmage game in front of college coaches.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ContentRenderer_paragraph__B2z36\">Just before 7 p.m., Bill heard\u00a0a cracking sound\u00a0and told his wife they should leave. As he jumped from his chair, a small branch grazed his leg. When he turned back to look for his wife, he saw her face down, pinned beneath several large branches. Gendie, who was hit on the head by a limb, was taken to Forbes Hospital, where she was\u00a0later pronounced dead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ContentRenderer_paragraph__B2z36\">&#8220;To be so traumatic, and with the heavy load of the type of branch and limb, it was devastating. That was who she was,&#8221; Bill\u00a0noted. There&#8217;s no weather involved, no wind. They were just sitting under a tree watching their daughter play softball.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ContentRenderer_paragraph__B2z36\">Luka described Gendie as a\u00a0loving and devoted\u00a0mother who gave everything to her daughter and husband. Over the years, he developed a close bond with the family, saying Marlee feels like a daughter to him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"ContentRenderer_paragraph__B2z36\">He spoke with Bill on the phone Friday morning, just days after the tragic incident. Luka shared that during their phone call, Bill told him Marlee had looked at him that morning and\u00a0said, &#8220;Hey dad. We got this. We&#8217;re gonna get through this.
