A video captured rough waves shortly before a boat capsized on the lake, triggering a major search and rescue operation over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Six people are dead and two remain missing after a 27-foot gold Chris-Craft capsized near D.L. Bliss State Park on Lake Tahoe around 3 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2025, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Emergency crews from Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe, California State Parks, and EDSO responded after receiving reports of 10 people in the water. The vessel reportedly overturned\u00a0due to large swells amid high wind conditions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

At the time, weather reports recorded winds at 30 knots and waves ranging from six to eight feet. Two people were rescued from the water and transported to a nearby hospital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A video taken by boat captain Joby Cefalu, shared by South Tahoe Now, captured\u00a0rapidly intensifying waves\u00a0shortly before the capsizing. Witnesses reported that winds suddenly shifted from the north, producing troughs up to\u00a0ten feet deep.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Cefalu, a veteran Lake Tahoe mariner, described the lake conditions as worse than 30-foot ocean waves \u2014 more extreme than anything he had seen in decades. He noted that northern winds of such intensity are rarely seen during summer. “It was a very, very tragic day on Lake Tahoe,” he\u00a0added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Following the incident, Cefalu helped set up a triage center at the Tahoe Keys Marina and praised staff for their swift efforts in assisting the victims. As first responders treated survivors, the search for the two missing individuals continued into the next day.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, search teams \u2014 including EDSO’s Search and Rescue, K9 units, a dive team, and the North Tahoe Fire Protection District \u2014 were\u00a0scouring the lake\u00a0for the two missing people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That afternoon, at approximately 3:15 p.m., the Coast Guard suspended its search. Authorities have not yet released the names of the deceased or missing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As Lake Tahoe reeled from a deadly boat capsizing,\u00a0another life had already been lost in Texas waters less than a month earlier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Ava Moore, 18, who recently finished a military preparatory program, was killed in a fatal water-related accident while kayaking on Lake Grapevine on May 25.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to an initial report from the Grapevine Police Department, a personal watercraft (PWC) carrying two women\u00a0collided with Moore’s kayak\u00a0on the evening of May 25. One of the women, identified as the passenger, remained at the scene and spoke with first responders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The other woman, believed to be the PWC operator, left the area and was later joined by a\u00a0male individual. According to the joint media advisory from the Texas Game Wardens and Grapevine Police Department, they believe the pair\u00a0struck another vehicle\u00a0while fleeing the scene.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Their vehicle was later located near the\u00a0Cobblestone Apartments\u00a0at Ruth Wall and Turner Road, as reported by WFAA-8.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Meanwhile, Moore was transported to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Grapevine, where she was\u00a0pronounced dead. She had returned to Texas just six days before her death, after completing her\u00a0first year of training\u00a0at the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colorado Springs on May 19.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She had also\u00a0accepted an appointment to join the U.S. Air Force Academy as a member of the Class of 2029.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In an effort to identify those involved, Grapevine Police\u00a0released a photo\u00a0of the PWC operator the following day and asked the public for assistance. By May 27, the operator was\u00a0identified\u00a0as Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, 21, who was taken into custody. Authorities later identified the\u00a0male companion as Maikel Coello Perozo, 21.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It is unclear whether Perozo has been arrested. However, police have\u00a0released mugshots\u00a0of both Gonzalez and Perozo to the media. In a public advisory, they also\u00a0stated, “If anyone has information regarding either suspect, please contact Grapevine Police detectives at cidmail@grapevinetexas.gov.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As the investigation unfolded, a firsthand account from a lake visitor shed light on the moments after the collision. Lisa Scrabeck, who was at the lake with her son, saw Moore being\u00a0pulled to shore\u00a0and immediately stepped in to help, a detail she shared with CBS News Texas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Scrabeck also\u00a0told WFAA, “Once she came out of the water, I had them lay her down and started helping at that point.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Scrabeck confirmed that Moore had been wearing a life jacket, which was removed before CPR was initiated. Earlier in the day, Scrabeck had seen the women on the PWC\u00a0behaving recklessly. Recalling the moment, Scrabeck noted that Moore did not appear to suffer after the collision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

She expressed her condolences to Moore’s family and shared how unimaginable the pain must be for her parents. Moore’s father later\u00a0acknowledged\u00a0the tragedy, “We are grieving the loss of our daughter at this time….Our prayers are also with the young ladies involved, along with their families.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As news of her death spread, support poured in from friends, family, and the wider community. A GoFundMe campaign created to assist with funeral expenses\u00a0described\u00a0Moore as “an outstanding student and athlete” and noted she was a 2024 graduate of Timber Creek High School.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Her best friend, Eva Love, spoke tearfully about the void Moore’s death has left. “She was gonna be a four-star general, like she was gonna serve her country. She loved her country. She wanted us to serve,” Love\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Love continued to\u00a0reflect on the emotional impact of her death, “You took someone who is just so kind and loving, and make sure’s [sic] everyone else around them is just taken care of. She was just one of our best friends. Like, I don’t even know how to explain her. She was just Ava.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Additional tribute also came from the U.S. Air Force Academy. On their official\u00a0Facebook page, Superintendent Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind described Moore as an exceptional and inspiring cadet candidate whose dedication to leadership and service made a lasting impression on those around her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Ava’s constant happiness and attitude helped her squadron get through the challenges of the Prep School, and her drive to excel was on display as she sought out leadership positions to improve herself and her team,” Bauernfeind\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n
