Every morning, I\u2019d walk out to the garden and come back seething. Carrots nibbled to stubs. Lettuce yanked clean from the dirt. Bean vines chewed through like some miniature buzz saw had rolled through in the night. I set up a motion-activated light. I installed a trail cam. I was sure I\u2019d catch a raccoon, a fox, maybe a hungry deer. I was ready to scare off whatever was eating my hard work. What I wasn\u2019t ready for was the truth\u2014that it would break my heart and piece it back together in a way I never saw coming.<\/p>\n

She had done what she came to do.<\/p>\n
The garden\u2019s grown back. I still lose a carrot or two now and then, but I don\u2019t mind. Runa sleeps inside now, curled at the foot of my bed. She\u2019s still stubborn. Still carries that wild streak. But there\u2019s something softer in her eyes.<\/p>\n
Like she knows something most of us forget\u2014that love doesn\u2019t need explanation, and that family is who we choose, who we protect, even when there\u2019s nothing in it for us.<\/p>\n
And now, when I see a rustle near the beans or a flash of red at the tree line, I don\u2019t get angry. I just watch. And smile. Because sometimes, what we think is a pest\u2026 is actually a miracle in disguise.<\/p>\n
